Early History
The Old Sea Box is one of the earliest properties built in St Andrews. It appears on the 1580 map of St Andrews by John Geddy a copy of which hangs in the hallway. At that time the house had a single stone room with a wooden upper story with stone steps leading up to it from outside. After the Reformation the Cathedral was demolished and the stones used to enhance and extend local houses. This was the case with the Old Sea Box and in the dining room it is possible to see where the old stone house, built mainly with small stones, has been added too with the larger stones from the Cathedral. In the eighteenth century the house was extended so that it became double fronted and the stairs (still extant) became part of a central hall. At this time the house was owned by a family called Kyd. Later the house was purchased by The Sea Box Society, a charity dedicated to housing elderly or destitute fishing families. The papers connected with the Society are to be found in the St Andrews University Library.
