We have had a small number of Aberdeen Angus at Craigowmill for some time with bulls being used for crossing with our X Highlanders. In 2012 we decided to start a herd of pedigree Angus with the purchase of 14 young heifers from the Sandy City herd in Shropshire. Subsequent purchases from Blelack,Fordel, Halbeath and Cardona have built the herd up to 35 cows.
Our policy is to breed medium sized animals with the emphasis on locomotion, feet and shape while maintaining the traditional Angus ”look.” We look for easy calving ,easy maintenance cattle with high EBVs for Marbling and Ribeye; our current stock bulls Gretnahouse Black Crusader and Fordel Black Magic were bought to enhance these particular EBVs in our herd.
In June 2017 we visited the Soutars at Kingston Farm and we were both highly impressed with their Native Angus. It should be remembered that the worldwide reputation of Angus Beef comes from these original cattle which were bred specifically to produce the finest beef from a grass based diet. Anybody who attended the Dunlouise Sale will attest to the quality of the Native Angus Beef whether from the Spit or the grilled burgers. The result? We bought 5 Dunlouise Females to add another element to our selection of Scottish Cattle!!
We have already exported Angus to France and Germany despite still retaining most of our heifers. From 2018 onwards we expect to have a select number of bulls and heifers for sale with the emphasis on our export markets where we have long experience with our Highland Cattle.
